Micro Hi Fi / Bookshelf

Post  OEB on Wed Jan 05, 2011 11:53 am

My wife requested a new system for the family room area - she likes to listen to her CDs there. So I've been doing research - and holy crap the Sony one's are freaking ugly. I'm looking for something relatively simple - but nice clean design with great sound. I've noticed that Europe has a far greater selection for these types of systems.

Something like this:

Personally, I would stay away from Bose. I don't like how they sound. But, it might be up your alley.

What kind of price range are you looking at? Denon and Onkyo make decent units at various price points. Either would be a solid purchase, but I'd tend to stick to Denon. Or, if you want to go slightly more esoteric, you could check out the Shanling MC-30, which includes a CD player, iPod dock, tuner and tube amplifier. People seem to either love or hate the design:

Pro-Ject also make their Box Design line of digital components, which are all micro-hi-fi. I haven't listened to any of the player, so I can't comment on quality. They offer source components as well as an amplifier, but you are looking at multiple components. You can check out the line here: Pro-Ject Box Designs.

And if you really want to go to town, look at Cyrus. Again, this will be a multiple-box solution, but you will be buying solid kit. Unfortunately, you are well into the thousands at this point, so not really sure if this is a realistic option. Read about Cyrus here: Cyrus Audio.

No Bose.

I am assuming that he is looking for a full mini-system, not components. I have not looked at those in ages (still happily using my aging Denon,) but the newest Denon looks quite nice:

The Philips Heritage system linked to in the youtube video comprises separate components, so I wasn't sure.

True, but into my experience most people who ask that question are looking for an all-in-one-box solution. (Even if they are O.K. with mini component systems, they still would prefer it to come in a package.)

I just saw a nice Cambridge and nicer Peachtree system on the Needle Doctor mini-system page:

I forgot about Peachtree. Cambridge might also be good. I imagine the Cambridge unit is a decent price, too.

It was cheaper than the Peachtree units. It might stiill be more than Frosty wishes to spend, but he did not specify price.

I was hoping from CES, but I was well aware that it might take six months.
