Wrist Watches

Post  East on Wed Oct 20, 2010 8:14 pm

Well today I was cleaning some stuff out and I came across my old seiko digital watch that I use to wear in the 90's when I was growing up, This watch was actually a gift from my grandfather who found it at work. I never really gave this watch a second thought or considered it particularly valuable. Well after finding it today I decided to research the model number Seiko A829-6010 (Finding that out was a project in it self considering somewhere along the line somebody swapped on the back from a A829-6029) Anyway I was surprised to learn that this was the preferred watch of NASA astronauts during the 80's and these things have a cult following today among watch enthusiasts.

Well last time I had it out the watch worked great, I am going to see about getting a new dial crystal and battery for it.

So what kind of watch do you guys have?

The a829-6010 is stainless steel. It was originally released in 1982. There were 3 variants made. The first was blue tan and white with a metal strap. The second one was black and red. The third which I have was black and gold.

More information can be found here http://www.digitalwatchlibrary.com/DWL/1work/seiko-a829-6019/

So what kind of watch do you guys have?.

I perspire so much that I've learned that having expensive watches is a waste of money. For the last 10 years Ive purchased inexpensive watches from Walmart. By the time the battery needs to be replaced the finish is off the band and the crystal is scratched, so I just throw the thing away.

I love watches and so I have a small collection. All are Swiss, but I'd like to get my hands on a German watch. I have a couple of quartz watches and the rest are mechanical, which I prefer. Quartz, of course, is more accurate, but I like the art that goes into building a mechanical watch.

Incidentally, one of my watches is another NASA favourite -- the Omega Speedmaster.

In my case, the issue tended to be physical damage. A watch is something else to bang against things accidentally -- something that I practiced quite often.

I know what you mean my seiko 7T62-0AM0 is seldom worn because I don't want it to get banged up. I wore the A829-6010 growing up and you can see how beat it is, I never really cared however because it was fairly beat when I got it. When I was younger I thought it was a cool looking watch. I find it interesting that a lot of people are interested in this watch now. I do prefer analog time pieces however I have owned this watch longer then I have been able to read an analog clock.

I feel naked when I don't wear a watch. In fact, forgetting to put on a watch in the morning makes me miserable for the rest of the day (until I get home and put one on, which makes everything better).

Short of one appendage, the rest are negotiable.

I wear this timex daily:

I was switching off with the 7T62-0AM0 on weekends but the battery died just recently, I am going to get batteries for both seiko's and intergrate the A829-6010 into the rotation.

Blur is so amazingly primitive that he still thinks that digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

I can provide more details if anyone actually cares, but, in a nutshell, it's an Omega Speedmaster X33, which is a quartz oscillator-based multifunction watch (i.e., a true tool or instrument watch). Omega developed the watch in consultation with pilots and astronauts, and the watch was marketed as being the watch that would go to Mars. The watch was used on Mir and Space Shuttle Columbia.

Would it not be easier just to strap your Blackberry to your wrist?

500 dollar range... Not sure if a analog or digital will be nice. Doing some searches but don't really know what to look for in a watch.

A $500 budget will certainly get you more then a timex. I don't think you can go wrong with seiko.
