Hi, can I come in?

Post  iMaxx on Wed Nov 19, 2014 2:01 pm

I am sorry to say I feel horrible as I have not been here in... jebus... ages!

Is there a way to change the emoticons? (I have all the old Voodoo marketing material dating back to... well... almost forever.)

Hope everyone is keeping well!

Yer pal, iMaxx.

Oh yeah, still with HP. Smile
I'm supporting their workstations now. (I actually took an HP Z420 and jacked it into a new Rage case.)

Things are still going well here and I am enjoying Colorado. Smile

This is what is left of the Voodoo Lab:

The Benches (Being used buy other folks now.)

My Private Collection of old Omens and Blackbirds. (Some chassis still boxed and unused.)

I was thinking there wasn't any thing left at all. Did they let you have any words of input of the new OMEN laptops?

Glad to see you made it.

I wasn't here before. Shortly after getting my First Voodoo laptop I found this place. It turned out to be Ktrons old grey unit the M360. It works again but I had to drop Clevo CL50 guts into it.

No, and I was actually quite annoyed by that.
I put in my 2 cents on the name. "You do realize the Omen was a flagship desktop, right?" (Fell on deaf ears.)

They are giving me one, though. Just waiting for it to arrive. Smile

WB, nice to hear from you again!

That is quite a collection of voodoo gear, I am a bit jelly.

I have a few hp xw8600 related questions I may have to ask you lol Have 2 of them sitting here that I cobbed together. Thermals go sky high right after power on(using the preinstalled hp thermal pads, Havn't had a chance to scrape them off and use real thermal compound). I am wondering if the heatsinks I have are adequate for the processors I am running. I know they made a few different variants of the heatsink with different thermal displacement capabilities.

Do you think HP cooler part # 446358-001 is adequate to cool an xeon SLAP4 and SLANW (2 of each in 2 workstation builds, Not 1 of each in the same machine lol) or do I need HP cooler part # 446359-001?

Is the only requirement to run the optional memory riser kit the larger 1050w power supply? (HP #440860-001) should I ever be so inclined. (and by inclined I mean find the stuff used for an affordable price lol)

You can not run the memory cooling fan with the memory risers, correct? What about the post error code indicating memory fan failure? (because its not plugged in)

Boy a tough one. These were before my time.
Give me the SN of the machine and I can see what was originally in it.

I'd have to dig into these ones too. Again, I came in when the Z series started up. Sad

Here is where the cobbed togeather part comes into play lol, Chassis were empty when I got them so chassis serial number is worthless.

The boards have (what I believe are serial numbers) PAEUR0J9VW31PX and PAEUR0MSUWL014. Not sure if those xeons are original to their configuration from hp because the person I acquired them from had been tinkering with the stuff as well.

Good news is both workstations post at least.

Truly a great machine for corporations. This is where hp shines imo. I cant even take points off for being a bit proprietary because so is dell (not sure about ibm) when you start getting into workstation / server grade stuff. (only better alternative would be a custom supermicro / tyan build)

Re: Hi, can I come in?

Post  iMaxx on Thu Nov 20, 2014 2:24 pm

Ok, did some digging.
(Not all good news.)

Just for general information, here is the Quickspecs document for the xw8600:

http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04140551

With regards to the processors:

Looking up the S-spec for the processors, the SLAP4 appears to be a Xeon L5410 CPU. This doesn’t appear to have ever been sold in the xw8600 – the processor microcode in BIOS probably will not know how to set it up properly. This is a very, very bad idea and should not be done. The BIOS will take a best guess as to how to set it up and it make things go breaky breaky.

The E series Xeons (such as the SLANW processor he mentioned – an E5410) is a low power processor option in a xw8600. Specs can be found here:

http://ark.intel.com/products/33080/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E5410-12M-Cache-2_33-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

The advantage here is that *any* supported heat sink is fine (and by supported, in this case, I mean “HP shipped this part in a xw8600” not “it fits on the socket so should be fine” Razz ). If the thermal interface is no longer good then replacing it with something appropriate may help.

The other thing which may be going on is that the thermals are actually fine. When the xw8600 first comes on, the fans ramp…. then once the OS loads, they should come back down once an ACPI aware OS takes control of the fans. I would expect the system with L5410 CPU’s to not behave properly though. Since the system may not know how to cool these CPU’s, it will likely peg the fans in an attempt to vent as much heat as possible. This can be quite loud and annoying.

With regards to the memory risers:

Don’t try and retrofit an xw8600 with the memory risers. There are numerous components involved in addition to the riser boards themselves… such as cooling / fan changes, the physical cage which holds the risers, and other chassis pieces / brackets / etc. This was never an after-market option (it was factory only), we have never supported retrofitting a system to support the risers, and the required wiring harness was a bit intricate. This falls in to the “bad things will almost certainly happen” category.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. That clears a bit up.

This is good news in a way. Socket 771 xeons can be had pretty cheaply these days on ebay. (Cheaper then used xw8600 heatsinks)

We should all bother Frosty about this lol Joking aside he is the only person with full admin of this forum as far as I am aware.

Frosty created these forums, so at one time he had administrator access, but the last time that he posted he said that he had forgotten his administrator credentials, so we are pretty much stuck as is.

And since this is mandatory:

The photos at the beginning of this thread are like something out of a movie or game. That could be Black Mesa or Aperture!
