Re: Builds, builds and more builds

Post  ADOR on Thu Dec 19, 2013 5:33 pm

I have three gobook 3's I need to get rid of. Pentium M 1.8 and ATI 9000. These are GPS equipped units so I will get rid of them one day. I haven't messed with the newest ones. On the toughbook side I have 19,30,74,52,U1 models for the newer ones and LOT of the older ones, lol.

Hmm ati 9000 is on par with some of the voodoo machines. Should be able to match them in games of the era if equipped with the appropriate ram and drive. They are touch screen machines too I take it like his core duo?

Yes touch screen, these units have the bump out on the lid for gps and bluetooth. Two slots for ram, the 1.8 pentium m is in a slot so it can be upgraded. Has a fan. This is the fully rugged model.

You can see the bump out on the lid for the gps and bluetooth. Offical model number is 260+ or gobook 3

official product page with all the specs.

Still when I scrapped out 4 of the gobook 2 (got them beat to hell for 20 bucks each, then stripped the gps out of them for other projects, the gps on them is on a pcmcia card and only takes the special driver to load it on any laptop with a pcmcia slot.) The toughbooks are still tougher, lol.

General dynamic bought out itronix.

On some of these the stuff to make them fully work is hard to find in the used market. Ones like Getac are really hard, to impossible to find.

My favorite General Dynamic one is the MR-1

That was the little pc that the woman in the expendable's 2 was using.

Re: Builds, builds and more builds

That is really small.

FT02 is coming out nicely. Better then I thought it would. It was missing almost every screw when I got it. It is starting to look like a case again. The FT02 has fan speed selector switches that mount in the top of the case with tiny screws. Needless to say the screws were missing and I was wondering what i was going to do to replace them. Then it dawned on me today and I dipped into my stash of laptop screws. Found 6 that match and fit perfectly. Got the fans all cleaned up while I was at it and I cleaned up some of the holes that had so much over spray in them It was preventing the screws from threading in.

So far all I have done is small stuff but I am impressed how its cleaning up. Fixed a few chips and nicks on it with some touch up paint from the trans am and it is looking a lot better. I will have to get a pic up when I make a bit more progress. Hopefully some during pictures of the drive cage being repaired or replaced.

The three smallest one I have are the Toughbook CF-U1 (fully rugged, 5.6" screen), Fujitsu Lifebook U810, Samsung Q1 ultra, oqo 01+ (runs xp, about the size of a smartphone, just thicker). I also have a sony Vaio UX (no battery, hard drive, cracked screen. Would like to fix it or replace it, but they are still pricy. The other ones have come way down in price.)

Had a vaio ux where I was working. They are more of a gimmick then they are useable/useful.

I have a M11x R1 and love it for traveling, Clevo came out with that right before Alienware discontinued there best selling model. I didn't see "why" in that logic on discontinuing it.

I am not sure quite how to phrase this but do you know of any linux based appliance that is a dedicated router? Preferably with wifi built in but if not i am not adverse to using a separate access point for wifi.

Would love to have an AIO solution I can configure with iptable rules. Instead of having a million things plugged in doing layer 3 translations etc causing undesired latency. Not to mention I only have a finite amount of room for this stuff on my desk.

I have heard of some before and went googling and seen they do have a few complete linux OS's for use as a router. I have never used any of them so I can't really say how good they are.

Re: Builds, builds and more builds

Post  East on Mon Jan 06, 2014 10:10 am

Cool, Ill send him an email. Im working on a stability issue with it first though. Keeps randomly locking up. I traced it to the ram (no pun intended). Isolated it to 1 of 3 sticks last night or the 2nd northbridge on the motherboard that handles the 2nd cluster of ram. (Don't think its the 2nd northbridge because both cpus work fine...?) Looking in the manual right now to verify the order in which the dimms should be populated.

IDK its odd it says 2 northbridges when the system posts although when you look at the board there is visibly only 1 northbridge which is supported by the diagram provided in the manual.

Looks like as with most modern systems the memory controller is built into the cpu. (Which gives me a convenient excuse to upgrade processors if that is the cause...)

I have it isolated down to the dimms marked P2 and 3 sticks of ram. Those are the dimms cpu #2 is responsible for managing.

Just a quick update, Been running it all day with all but 1 stick of ram and oddly enough has not froze once. Its either the last stick or one of the sticks was not seated all the way.

Got the tyan 100% stable and finally acquired the last stick of ram to make it the full 32gb.

Also found this interesting mini itx case.

It does look intresting. I just got a Alienware hanger 18 case that looks new never used headed toward the house. 50 buck buy it now. I just rearranged the tv area was was needing a short and wide case. Not sure what I am going to drop in it yet. 5 more days till the new AMD CPU's hit. I will be looking for perfomance charts for them when It does.

Figured it out. That chip is the southbridge just looking at what is connected to it in the diagram. The 2 northbridge's the bios talks about seem to be built into the cpus. (Which is why they control the ram directly)
