Add another log to the fire

Post  ADOR on Wed May 23, 2012 11:53 am

Something came in the mail today, SWEET! Thanks Blur.

Fedex pulled up with with a big box so I guessed this is what it was. After signing off on my package I brought it in and opened it up to see what I had. I knew he said he was going throw in a couple of extra things but I wasn't expecting the Voodoo bag. Not sure what originally came in it. I see he as done several upgrades to this hex from the 2.5 harddrive holder to the upgraded video card heat sinks. I have it all spread out on the bed right now to give it a quick cleaning then make sure I can put the puzzle back together. Dual video cards and all. I think I have at least one spare 250 GB HD so that should get me started for now.

Time to do up a little lunch for the kids, then back to the voodoo project.

oh yeah the fans in the bags were the original fans. Then replaced with Papst fans for the rear.

Ugh molex fans. The first thing I would do is ditch those molex fans in favor of something with a speed sensor. Molex fans run at 100% all of the time and while perfectly acceptable (and preferred) in a data center environment will be noisy for a gaming pc. Depending on what your planning on sticking in there you might want to pick up a matching lian li fan controller. Take it from me dont get the nzxt ones they are crap.

I would orriant the side of the fan that the power cable exits toward the motherboard and route the cable under the board. You can have it exit on a side of the board that has a fan connector on it.

From an upgrade stand point I would like to see you do a socket 2011 i7 build with this. Imo that is the way to go. you could probably run stuff 2 550 ti's in sli in there. I did with the omen and no overheating problems to speak of. Had to step up to an enermax 1350w though as the pos silent pro 1kw was not up to the task. No more mysterious hardware lag though.

Right now I am going to leave it as is performance wise. My next build I want to do I was wanting to do a AMD/ATI build, but I may just do that inside that big alienware I got a few months back. Main thing is I have finally got my Voodoo desktop thanks to Blur. I will upgrade it later on, but right now I just don't have the cash to do it like I want. My next big purchase needs to be some flat screens. The alien right now is on a 17" CRT, yea I know, way past time for a upgrade. I have been using my M9750 as my everyday computer, going to swap that to a desktop.

I haven't even looked at my alerts yet, lol.

Left hinge cover is missing, Refurb COA for Windows XP is torn damaged, missing hard drive, Missing two keys, hardware problems.

What model voodoo is this? Guessing Envy ma538 according to the model # he posted "Arima W622-DK8X", BUT it looks a LOT different than the ma538 I have already. You can see the pictures of it here http://refugees.makingforum.com/t117-my-voodoo-collection toward the bottom of my first post. latch is different, camera is different.

I like it but with its age I have a hard time rationalizing it. I do know with 90% certainty whats wrong with it. Might consider it if your not interested idk yet. The drive it takes is IDE? If so that's another problem I have with it...

I am not looking at that much. Got it bookmarked to watch it. Maybe if it was a little lower I would consider it. If you want It go for it. In the caddy of some toughbooks we have a little more room so we have made do with the sata to ide adapter on some models.

Something like this?

Might have to look into it. The only laptop I know it would fit into is my blue m780.

Yep, that is the one, we got two others that are custom made where the sata and ide hook up is on the same side and another one turned at 90deg.

I do not know if using the word "fire" to describe a Voodoo project is the best choice. There is a bit of a history of that!

And that I think that was involved with water cooling right? I seen a old thread about that somewhere.

Congrats on the new toy! I haven't seen that bag before, must be old school!
I was in downtown yesterday and happened to drive by the old voodoo house. Not sure what business is in there right now, no signage, but makes you wonder how this company started from just that small house! Smile

Judging by the local clientele, I'd be afraid to find out what business is going on in those old houses.
