Two new desktops to play with

Post  ADOR on Wed Dec 28, 2011 3:15 pm

During Christmas I got two desktops to use at home. My current desktop is HP multimedia tower with dual core Athlon 2.3, 3gb ram, upgrades on this are a 500w power supply and 250gts video card. I tried to upgrade the cpu and couldn't because of the limits HP had on the motherboard from the factory. Found lots of complaints about it searching. You are limited to 3 cpu's and I had the biggest one. I am yanking the 250gts out when I get home next time putting into my new gaming rig. The HP will be put back under my TV and will be back on playing movies duty.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/270875457757?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I don't think I did too bad for 200 shipped to my door. The guy had several that were corporate machines that had be recycled. Very few scratches on the case, 80gb hd, 2.4 Athlon dual core, 1gb of ram, crappy 128 MB video card ( they took out the dual cards but the hookups are still there), 700w power supply, nividia sli motherboard.

I put in a extra 250gts 1gb card I had from trying to upgrade my son's video only to find out his OPTIPLEX 745 would only take a low profile card. I loaded it up with windows 7 64 bit before I left the house to test drive it.

Future plans call for 22 to 24" monitor, installing the second 250gts card in SLI, upgrading the hard drive to larger size, or maybe SSD / hard drive combo, installing a larger CPU ( I have a black edition 2.7 dual on hand, but may see if this board can handle x 4 or x 6 CPU) and getting the fastest speed ram it can handle 4 to 8 gb's worth. I always like this style of the Alienware case but never realized that they were this big, you have plenty of room for anything in there.

My number 2 machine

http://www.ebay.com/itm/220911167310?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I am going to do a few upgrades to this one but still deciding what to do to it. The motherboard can take a core2duo so I am going to go with a core2duo or 3.8 Pentium 4, 4gb of ram, upgrade to the video card. I am thining about a low profile ati card for it. I got two more GB of ram that matched what was in it. Got to locate one more, I am sure it will show up before long.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/300632509530?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I will also have to decide on good monitor, keyboard and mouse for travel.

Nice purchases. The Tt reminds me of the alpine dvd heads.

I had the pleasure of replacing a fried enermax psu on a nearly identical alienware to that one a while back. Everything is hidden behind the 2nd side panel on those and is held in place with a shit load of zip ties.

I was really surprised with both units. The lan box case is near perfect, it was in the original box with original foam wrap and Styrofoam holder, original box, etc for motherboard and 7" monitor. The only thing I could find wrong with the alien desktop was the power button on the outside of the case didn't work. I found a button on the motherboard labeled power on and it worked, three plugin's were unplugged one labeled "power on" ( got it in the right spot and the external button works now), "hard drive led" "case led". The two led cables are still unhooked. Lights on one side of the case don't work. The connector on one side is damaged. I think I can make brass strip work on it. I am having to keep an eye on my oldest son, he was tying to jack the alien, lol.

Which connector is damaged? Just salvage the plug off an old case don't do a hack job on it like chowbow would do.

It's not a regular plug in connector. It touches the case side when you snap the cover back on to make the connection. It is only for the lights so I am in no rush to get it done. The machine runs fine and that is the main thing. I may even run into one on the bay. ( I will try to find a picture of the connector)

Seajunior is 8 and he and his friends at school were debating the reality of a Santa. By next year, I expect the illusion to be shattered.

Hey Ador:

Since you seem to be the toughbook knowledge base here. I'm think of picking up Panasonic cf-29

Do you think the linked ebay item is a good buy or anything to watch out for. I have read the faq thread on them on notebookreview, but wanted to see what you had to say.

thanks a bunch

You can get one cheaper. Were you really wanting a fully rugged one? There is semi rugged and business class machines too. If you know what to look for there are some semi rugged and business class machines with ATI dedicated graphics in them.

How are you going to use the computer?
How much battery life do you want?
how much do you mind it weighing?
Do you want a internal CD/dvd drive or only external?
single or dual core?
How big of a screen do you want? Resolution?

I think I can get you a better price on one, I have asked a couple of the guys in the forum on what they have.

The cf-18 and 19 is the tablet version, no internal cd/dvd drive but half the weight of the regular model.

I do some light selling of them but when the priced dipped a while back I got a bunch of CF-18's I have been slowly selling when I get time to fix them.

Most of your toughbooks are passively cooled. There case is magnesium and the heat is sent to the case like big heat sink. Floppy drives, cd/dvd drives, media bay battery, media bay harddrive can be hot swapped.

I have personally have had and messed with these models.

CF-25,27,28,29,30,17,18,19,50,51,52,72,73,t1,t2,t5,w2,w5,p1,u1,07, and various accessories and docks

This is what I have on hand right now personally and all of them are not in there yet.

Just answer those questions and I will narrow down your search.

Also a gobook 3 may be a option, I have three of them I have messed with so far. All of mine are 1.8 Pentium M, 2gb ram max, 9000 ATI, 2hrs of battery life left, bluetooth, gps. You can read about our adventure with them here.
http://toughbooktalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=1008

I will have to look at the current price but all three of mine I have about 80 buck each in them.

This company does like to do less than 24 hrs auctions, if too many people haven't seen them yet they will go for under 200 dollars, rubber keyboard, 1.3 pentium m, harddrive and caddy, battery and ac adapter, I have bought from them in the past. May want to jump on this if you don't want a Mk4 or Mk5 with SD card slot. This one can't boot from usb, but can with floppy using plop linux boot manager it's a Mk2, the Mk3 1.4 and up can boot from usb. I have a Mk3 with custom 66 channel gps in it. On these you may want to upgrade the harddrive and more ram later on as the 512mb they have is on the mother board but will max out on 1.5 for these. The last auction I did with them was a CF-30 media bay battery. It can cost new 150 to 350. I got it CHEAP http://www.ebay.com/itm/320852656326?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 This is the first string of CF-29's that I have seen them list in a while. There will probably be more done like this.

What I'm looking for is the highest spec. I'm thinking of loading MS HomeServer 2011 on the tough-book. So when I leave for an extended period of time I can store it. Currently I'm using a Hexx for a home server. Don't really care for wireless since HomeServer requires cabled connection. Also I will throw in a 1 terabyte notebook drive in it, it will also need a DVD writable drive(not sure if they have them). Currently have about 500 gigs of left on my current home server. So not really worried about running out of space.

BTW awesome collection of toughbooks...

Is homeserver 32 bit or 64 bit like all of the other server versions? IF it is 64 bit you would need a CF-19 Mk2 or higher, CF-30 Mk2 or higher, CF-50 Mk3 or Mk3ll or higher, CF-52 any, cf-74 mk2 or higher etc. Those and a few other I didn't list will be core 2 duo, early dual cores are only core duo's.

If my brain housing group serves me correctly homeserver only comes in 64 bit. yeah it seems core 2 duo 1.6 will be top dog for the toughbooks.

I trust DVD more than flashdrives. Too bad carbonite does not support HomeServer flavors. Rolling Eyes

I have found that consumer recordable optical discs degrade over time. This is especially true for cheaper media. Give that dvd 6-10 years and it will corrupt enough that its useless.
