That reminds me: our former Village Administrator moved to a much larger city, where there accounting software was apparently a bit out-of-date: it was originally written in COBOL.

COBOL has actually evolved since it was first introduced in the late 50s. It now includes object-oriented compilers and support for XML, as an example.
