Where I use to work before discarding customers failed drives we would use a torx bit to remove the cover. We would then spin the drive up and take a screw driver and etch the platter with it. It was rather fun to do as well. You don't want to press hard just lightly touch it against the platter while its spinning.

But why destroy the drives? It is your data. I would just save them in the closet for a potential future project.

Not as well as you would think. That is a myth. The magnet in the head stack motor is super powerful (You cant pull it apart by hand) and it doesn't corrupt anything.

Oh and another one for the list

Okay, I should have clarified by stating a powered magnet (e.g., a high-frequency AC magnet). A fridge magnet won't cut it. A welding arc or anything else that creates a high-energy magnetic field would do the trick too. Mind you, this would also wreck the servo track. Might as well use a screwdriver. Or a bat. Or a sledgehammer. The possibilities are endless.

Let me clarify that. lago should save the drives in his closet for a future project.

I should probably clarify: Iago was kidding.

I am just going to reformat them repeatedly once I have transferred everything that I need to my new computer. I have no real reason to hang on to drives that old.

It has not been the best year, let alone week. I am doing it this evening no matter what -- I really need to get things going. First of all, though, I have to run up to my parent's house to borrow an old monitor, as my ten-year-old CRT finally bit the dust.

That must have been one crappy crt. I had a 21" ibm crt mfg in 1992 until about 2005. And it still worked great when I got rid of it. It was just really large and heavy and I had no reason to keep it since I then had had a working spare lcd. (My 15" proview which is still in the closet)

I am a bit pissed I got rid of my old 20" NEC tv "monitor" it had about 8 av ins on the back. It would have been awesome to have a tv that matched the turbo grafx but it had a horizontal line through the picture and the internal speakers were blown so I let it go a number of years back.

It was a Viewsonic that worked great up until roughly a year ago when it started to develop "the bends" on the top half of the screen while it was warming up. After a half hour or so, the image would stabilize. Now it just pops off as soon as it is fed a signal.

My old 15" viewable nec crt had waves in it as well.

Come to think of it I have not had good luck with nec displays. The power button fell off of my 19" nec lcd as well.

A ten-year lifespan on a CRT monitor is certainly not bad, though it is hardly the best. Keep in mind that it got heavy, heavy use. My parents did have a 13" Sony Trinitron TV that they bought the year after I was born (1968) that they finally got rid of in the mid-Nineties -- and it was still the original picture tube. (Mind you, the thing was so dark at that point that it was barely useable, but that is a heckuva lifespan for a single picture tube.)

If anyone wants to buy this laptop, let me know. There is a motherboard for sale on eBay, but I don't have the cash to make the repair at the moment, and I have to fix my Envy 133 first...

Will post pictures later today.. As for price, I don't know. I paid about 300$ for it two years ago, and I hope to get somewhere near that amount. But would be happy to sell it to someone from this community, to someone who gets it running again!

I remember that auction. It was completely disassembled in the listing. The mobo was impossible to find then and it would be even harder to find this many years later. I don't remember if we ever did determine what model it was based off of.

Did some research back then, it is a VooDoo Envy M370 based of the Mitac 8050(motherboard linked in previous post).

It is the full case, missing hinge covers and screws. CPU cooler is included..

The problem is that any mitac is impossible to find parts for. Took me years to find parts for an 8355. I ended up cannibalizing parts off of a beat up envy 855 to save mr blurs which was in a lot nicer condition.
