I generally enjoy discussions around restaurants and food. Today is the exception.

Because of everything noted here, I actually really enjoy eating in restaurants with open kitchens. Not only do you get to see the chefs do their magic, but the kitchens are immaculate.

I am in the Cities for a funeral and I stopped by a small Asian take-out place. I had little hopes, but they had a pho sign in the window. Turns out that a Vietnamese family took it over last week, and I ended up having a lovely bowl of pho. They even made me a Vietnamese coffee -- they said that I was the first person to ask for one.

The owner actually asked me how I liked it: sweeter or more bitter. Usually at restaurants you get what you get. I told her I like it balanced between the two and she hit it out of the park.

Blur freaked me out with his edit of my post to show how he read it -- I thought that was how I typed it for a second!

Which reminds me, here is an example of something that is not exactly racism, but still shows how stereotypes can inform how people think. I have described Vietnamese coffee to people by explaining how they sometimes drip-brew it at your table, and told them that when it is done you stir it up and pour it over ice. Surprisingly often, they respond, "You pour it over RICE?!?!"

Regardless, now I am hungry for a vermicelli bowl with charbroiled chicken, beef and tiger shrimp, and spring rolls. And, yes, I'll have a Vietnamese coffee with that please.

Actually, the coffee shops have been cracked down upon. Seems that running around in lingerie or a bikini gave the girls to much opportunity to "fall out" of said uniform, causing instances of indecent exposure. So in an attempt to prevent such occurances, some shops simply airbrush on a bikini, ...and the police and politicos are OK with that.

Must be a SoCal thing. I have yet to see a bikini in a Vietnamese restaurant around here -- which considering the employees that work there is probably a good thing!

It's a SoCal, and San Jose thing actually. However, I agree it has to be done right or not at all!

Given the weather around here, it is a good thing people don't wear bikinis year round. That could result in some severe frost bite mid-winter.

I just put up a vinyl window lettering in the window of the only Vietnamese restaurant on my route and they rewarded me with a nice bowl of pho. Sadly, they do not make coffee there!

Well, I already put up an hours sign for them with a Pepsi logo on it. They wanted lettering in their upper window that read "Pho & vermicelli salads." We ended up printing reversed vinyl lettering (to go on the inside rather than the outside) that was about 15" tall by 105" wide. Even cutting it into sections, that was a bitch to apply.

We have a good custom graphics department that can print just about anything. They even made a 3'x50' banner for one grocery store that I have dealt with.

Have you asked your graphics department for advice on scanners?
