The boards that power up but dont display video are usually a waste of time. I have yet to be able to successfully resurrect one. K-tron managed to resurrect his but it was short lived and the board quickly died again.

Going on the pics you posted that board looks like a v5.2. You can look at the sticker on the ram slots to tell for sure.

If you are going to start buying a motherboard for it you wont want to waste money on anything less then a v6.1. In the very worst case you could settle for a v5.3 but that would limit you to the 6800.

In theory you could replace the vrm but that chip is overloaded and it will just blow up again shortly down the road.

If the laptop has been messed with before you may want to double check with me if it looks like there are thermal pads missing as without them your rebuild will be short lived.

The stickers in the ram board area
NCD90T00AJ00945

FIRSTBIOS
NOTEBOOK PRO
C2

NOV 04

I won't be in a rush to get this one done. I head back to work on the 5th, so I will have 28 days to read up and research everything. Does everything line up on the K series boards that have AMD CPU for this chassis?

It does. I will be buying this k series soon that is suppose to have a fried video card.

I was going to use the parts for my own projects but If you are interested in converting your voodoo over to 709 specs I would have no problem selling you the mobo cpu and maybe even the ram. The only thing I want out of it is the 7950. I intend on trying to repair it. Naturally anything I sell you I will test first and guarantee it works.

As of today I had the one you had listed and these two on my watch list. They end shortly.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/160645903963?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

both working with 3.8 cpu

But I do like the idea of a dual core amd better. Would the 6800 card work on in the AMD chassis? I don't really need the power, just for fun and older games. My best laptop is a M9750 with single 8700.

I have a alienware m5550r3 with core 2 duo 2.0 7600 video card that I have been thinking of getting of getting rid of. Works but has bad video card. I did the bake trick on the card and it worked so I know it's the video card. I have the factory restore disks with it too if any one is interested.

I would be careful buying systems that post but say no further testing was preformed. As I stated these systems are notorious for not seeing the raid controllers and refusing to recognize optical drives. I sold a 6.1n motherboard because I could not for the life of me get the raid controller to work. It would load the raid bios about 1 in every 16 boots and if it did load the computer would later lock up because it lost communication with the controller.

Provided I get the k and the board is good I would be open to trades. Possibly for the m5550r3. I assume you are dumping it because the video card is damn near impossible to find.

I also have a working 6800 for a d900 series around here somewhere but from my experience they usually survive the v5.2 blowing up if they were not already having problems.

As far as the alien is I am just over loaded right now. I know a guy that does IR repair and has his own machine and would fix it for 40 bucks, but I just don't really need it. I am sitting on over 30 laptops right now Including the ones I got to sale. My be closer to 40. Just time to thin out on the ones I am not going to use.

I have several projects going on. Some or older projects that I am getting ready to put on ebay. My main laptop is a ALIENWARE M9750. I keep a Toughbook CF-18 with factory gps in the truck, There is a CF-28 in the truck that is for movies when we travel. I keep another CF-18 for three wheeler rides and other abuse. All 4 of my kids have toughbook CF-28's, I am working on upgrading them to the CF-73 model. They want to play more games and this model is the semi tough model and has a ATI 9000 video card. As soon as I get enough harddrives, ram and CAddy's for the CF-73's there other ones are gone. I have two different toughbooks going into my Halo Warthog replica project. I also bought several more toughbooks to fix and resale, got a shipment of parts coming but they haven't come in yet. Got my 4 voodoo's and voodoo idol replica and I just replaced my travel toughbook with a newer dualcore model. Also got a couple of the wearable computers just for kicks. Been finding them cheap and fixing them up.

I still have two cl-50's and one works. Why is the video ram on the acer showing only 16mb? or is it just turned down in the bios?

I believe that there is an option to allocate vram from the main ram. I will have to check on my 355 and get back to you.

I just looked and there is no option I see on my 355 to change the amount of vram. On my 355 the amount of vram is not even listed in the bios. I suspect that the 290 that is up for sale has a later revision of the bios installed. I never tried to update my bios on this laptop after I heard the rumor that there was a bad cl series bios image floating around the net that bricked them.

I was leaving for work when I posted that, on the rig in Dubai right now. I didn't think there was any think like that in the bios of the cl-50 I have. When I get home I will double check and see. There is a 12" voodoo that has posted on ebay right now. Has the book with it. Backlight is out.

Re: My voodoo collection

I saw that this morning. Its worth watching although I am skeptical it is actually the inverter. I remember when I use to have a dell cpx it had a nasty habit of frying out what ever supplied the power to the inverter. When I got it the backlight was out because of it and I changed the mobo to fix it. When it died again I decided it was time to dump the laptop.

Happy birthday btw

That green voodoo that was up there went for too much money, Especially being broken. I do not know why but somebody seriously over paid, and now they have to track down an msi inverter for it and prey it dosnt have a mobo issue that is preventing the inverter from getting power like my old cpx did.

That other guy relisted the blue one he has been trying to sell

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Voodoo-Envy-gaming-laptop-HP-PC-alien-custom-computer-/380368585208

But if history is any indication he probably has a $900 reserve on it again so I doubt it will be selling anytime soon. I actually have the unpainted sager version of the laptop he is selling. It is a laptop of average specs. The part that really sucks about it is it only supports ide hard drives.

That is what gets me about most of the toughbooks that I work with. They still have the IDE hook up and not enough room in the caddy for the adapter. I seen that pop up today and thought I recognized it from before. But if I was going to spend that much I would get a 133. I got a good deal on a accessory for a 133 a few months back. They guy had is laptop stolen and I got all the restore disks, dvd drive, adapters and even stickers from him on ebay. Maybe one day I will run across one.

I was watching that accessory pack. I figured if he didn't get his price he would relist it for less but that is about when you must have jumped in

I am glad that you got the x7200 lago. It is indeed a clevo. So has the great data migration race begun? I take it that your trip must be over if you got it.

I hope now that you see exactly how large the x7200 is it still meets your portability needs. Have you picked out a case for it yet?

Did digital storm provide any benchmark numbers? I am curious how the mobile 580's in sli did at 3dmark.

It came with a case. It is large indeed, but it will be fine for my needs. I carry a smaller notebook every day for work. This one will probably only go out on weekends, or similar. By the way, it also came with the extra power brick and converter box to run both simultaneously if necessary, which most of the other vendors charged $125-$150 extra for. I am quite pleased so far. The closest thing to bloatware on it was Cyberlink Media Suite. Otherwise, just the software for the webcam, fingerprint reader, and Intel Extreme Tuning.

No numbers with it. I am busy at a coffee shop installing and updating Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Quicken, some games, Security Essentials, etc. I will download 3Dmark and Futuremark when I get a chance.

Actually, I am getting frustratingly slow download speeds here, and 3Dmark11 is 280mb, so I will probably wait until later. It is taking long enough to download patches.

Here is a quick update for ADOR

(By now you guys should have figured out that that carpet proves its mine )

I just got home and it was sitting on my door step. I did not tear to far into it yet but it is exhibiting the classic symptoms of a bad mobo. At the very minimum the board will need the graphic card standoffs resoldered as a real monkey of a technician was working on this thing.

Considering what was included I think I did alright. The plastics are in very nice condition and at first glance I see nothing wrong with the video card itself. I didn't test it yet but if I had to make a guess based on the mobo problem I would guess that it is still good.

I will keep you guys updated as useual probably in my projects thread. Also I checked into it and rjtech still sells brand new t/k motherboards for $430 each if you can not find one elsewhere cheaper. I would still keep my eyes open for a posting parts machine if I were you and I would ask the guy a lot of questions about the motherboard.

Well time to go tear it down.
